Profiles - Larry Olson

Background information

Living in the burbs with my family having come out a couple of years ago (two sons at home, two daughters out of the house – youngest son Andrew has run with FRFW twice and may join someday). I work for the government and am retired from Navy Reserves.

I joined the club in the first weekend of Feb. 2005 (Was I nuts? It was COLD out!) I first heard about it from my therapist; later, I met David Reithoffer, who convinced me to join. Last year, I was club Treasurer and this year, you chose me as your President (to paraphrase Stewie Griffin, “Today, FRFW, tomorrow the world!”)

Reason you started running/walking with the club?

To meet people, and to give myself a fun reason for running twice a week. I have to admit that FRFW folks are the most down-to-earth of any gay group I’ve encountered.

Favorite race?

Until PTR 2005, I hadn’t run a race since 1980 (although I felt obligated to run regularly for cardio health and to pass the Navy fitness requirements). With the encouragement of my FRFW buddies, participating in the circuit races is beginning to grow on me.

Suggestions for staying injury-free?

Take it slow and easy, especially if you’re not used to it, or are in middle-age

Favorite food?

Healthy – salad with a rainbow of raw veggies and vinaigrette dressing with fresh fruit or sherbet for dessert; More fun – BBQ ribs and rice pudding

Favorite non-running/walking activity?

Singing with the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus and showtunes at Sidetrack; volleyball with the “Frontspikers”; family tree research, and someday, line dancing at Charlie’s

Favorite movies

Silly comedies with memorable lines (Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Big Business, Overboard, The Naked Gun Series, Grandma’s Boy)
