Profiles - John Berton
Questions for the President.
- Name: John Berton
- Occupation: Owner, Green Lightning Sustainable Energy Solutions (We install solar hot water and solar electric systems)
- Runner or walker? Former runner. Injuries made me a walker. Hope to get back to running.
- Favorite non-running/walking activity? Swimming, biking, ceramics, solar power, canoe trips, building a farm in northern Wisconsin with my partner, Jon Hove.
- How did you first hear about the club? I was in a French conversation group with David Reithoffer in 1994. I had come out in 1992. I was having a hard time meeting people because I didn't spend much time in bars. He told me about FrontRunners. I liked the idea of a social situation where everyone was gay. At the circle I remember being amazed that all these gorgeous guys were runners and they were all gay. I had never seen so many gay men in the same place that wasn't a bar. Participation in the meals and social activities was great! (Loved Medici on Surf! Now it's Tweet and Tokyo Marina) I stayed because the club proved to be so much fun and I got some great exercise too. And for the last 13 years it's remained a great source of outings, friends, relationships, and, of course, where I found my partner. I love this club.
- Past positions within the club: Editor, Social Director, Restaurants, PTR co-chair, PTR Registration, database manager, side captain at the Marathon, volunteering at and other races.
- Favorite movie Some Like it Hot, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, Marilyn Monroe.
- Music Classical, early jazz, 60s & 70s, folk, country, and, yes, musicals.
- Book Historical novels, A Canticle for Leibowitz, authors: Garrison Keillor, Winston Churchill, Noam Chomsky, Gore Vidal, and everyone else.
- TV Show I stopped watching TV when I left my parents' house in 1973. I remember All in the Family and Star Trek from the early 1970s… We had a B&W TV. It wasn't instant on. I remember Lowenbrau beer commercials…tonight is kinda special, the beer you pour, should say something more…tonight, tonight, let it be Lowenbrau…the guy had wide floppy lapels on his shirt. Big moustache. Big hair. There must have been a gorgeous woman in the commercial but I remember nothing of her…should have been a clue that I was gay.
